Vikings Sports Report: September

The RMHS Athletic Department is to bring you the September Vikings Sports Report, your monthly newsletter for all your Rockport Middle High School Athletics news. The month of September has been an exciting start to the fall season. All of our teams have been working hard, supporting one another and competing well! We are excited to move forward with some initiatives for this upcoming year including but not limited to, Student Athlete of the Month, the RMHS Athletic Department Leadership Council, Unity Day, Appreciation Games, and much more. Our focus in the athletic department this year is going to be Pound the Stone. Our focus centers on doing the work every day, emphasizing the little things and what we can control. We are excited to continue to see our student athletes in action out on the fields and course and looking forward to a great fall season!

Student Athlete of the Month

Flynn Blanchard: September Student Athlete of the Month

September Student Athlete of the Month Flynn Blanchard: Boys Soccer

"Flynn is the type of player that every coach wants on their team. He is an elite player with the skills to make the players around him better. Through 6 games he has posted a stat line of 3 goals and 3 assists, which is tied for 1st on the team with 6 points. As good of a player as he is on the field, he’s just as good of a person off the field. He is very active within the Rockport Youth Soccer community when it comes to reffing games or painting lines on the field so the younger players have a field to play on. He is well respected by his teammates and coaches which is why he is a two year captain and speaks volumes to his character on and off the field." - Coach Douglass
September Student Athlete of the Month Kenzie Elder

September Student Athlete of the Month Kenzie Elder: Girls Soccer

"Kenzie is one of the hardest workers on the team. She shows up every day with a smile on her face and the willingness to work. She is always asking for advice on what she can work on to improve. Kenzie is always there at the end of practice helping to clean up and carry equipment. She has taken on a huge role this year as a central midfielder. She understands her role and works every day to learn and grow. As the transition player between the offense and defense, she often has to do the clean up work or mark one of the best players on the other team, winning the ball and handing it off to the offense, who get the glory of scoring goals." - Coach Chapman

RMHS Athletic Department Leadership Council

“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born-that there is a genetic factor to leadership. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.” — Warren Bennis

How do you grow your student leaders? Leadership is one of the most important skills we can help our youth develop, and sports provides the perfect medium to practice and grow leaders. While on the field, participation in interscholastic sports provides a great platform for honing leadership skills, this growth can be magnified with intentional off-the-field support by coaches and administrators.

As coaches and educational leaders, we sometimes make the mistake of assuming all of our student-athletes know what leadership means and what effective leadership behaviors look like. We choose student-leaders without providing the necessary foundational information of what it means to be a leader or what expectations exist for captains. Subsequently, captains then “lead” with fuzzy agreements about what the job responsibilities include.

About:
  • Leadership program designed for high school student-athletes
  • Develop leadership skills, promote sportsmanship, community service, and school spirit
  • Provide a voice for student-athletes, communication between student-athletes and administration
  • All varsity captains for the current school year are members and coaches may nominate others they deem to be leaders on the teams

We plan to have our first meeting as a group in October. Our focus for the year will be:
  1. Bridging the Gap – How to Lead Your Friends Without Losing Them
  2. Communication & Conflict Resolution – Giving Feedback That Works
  3. The Liaison Role – Connecting Players and Coaches
  4. Mindset & Pressure – Poise, Imposter Syndrome, and Emotional Control

2026-2027 RMHS Athletic Department Theme

Pound the Stone

Pound the Stone

Success is not a single event. It is the culmination of the hard work that is done when no one is watching. We are not chasing instant results. We will master daily execution because we know that relentless consistency outweighs motivation when striving for a positive outcome.

TRUST THE PROCESS. GRIT OVER TALENT. POUND THE STONE.

Sportsmanship Statement

The goal is to create a positive and supportive environment with a strong emphasis on sportsmanship. Athletics provide a great opportunity to understand adversity, deal with difficult situations, and the joys of healthy competition. We are aware that there will be times when an official makes a controversial call or there is a play that could have been handled differently, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the spectators to handle these situations in a sportsmanlike and understanding manner. Be a role model for others. A negative reaction will not change the outcome but rather will create a negative environment that detract from the student athletes and all their hard work.

There is an expectation that all spectators at athletic events act in a sportsmanlike manner at all times. This includes both students and adults. There is a zero tolerance policy for berating officials, foul language, and disrespect for game administrators. Additionally, spectators should not call out the numbers or names of anyone on the opposing team. We ask that each individual in attendance positively cheer on their own team. If a game official or game administrator determines that a spectator in attendance at an athletic event is not adhering to the expectations provided above, that individual will be asked to leave.

We appreciate all of our spectators and their support for our athletic programs. It is truly a pleasure to see the enthusiasm and passion for our student athletes. Go Vikings!
